What kind of locker? Lunchbox? Full? I suggest getting them done with a gear change, most shops(if you have one do your gears) will charge little if any more to install the locker as well...

yes you can. this is the way that many people do it and they happen to be using lunchbox lockers like a lock-right or a detroit ez locker. it is a good way to increase the abilities of your vehicle and learn the limits of it each time before adding the next thing.

Hey, not to jack a thred, but I'm considering welding the front of my D44.

Hows this handle on the road?

My plan unless some one can tell me otherwise: Welded front, Detroit in the rear

Is it the full time axle? Im assuming not. You should be fine just driving around with the hubs unlocked. If you need '4x4' on the street just lock one, then you can still steer. :woot:

I'm planning on still using my electronic T-case untill I build a doubler. I'll switch at the tip of a hat. I'm thinking a welded front is the way to go. Plus, my ranger is slowly turning into a trail rig / winter beater / mobile sex machine so a welded front shoudl be ok

Please continue with your regular schedualed posting

my ranger is ... a ... mobile sex machine ...
Gotta love that extended cab.

Sounds like you'll be alright. I know the FSB's came with the full-time and I was hoping you weren't planning on welding that... But I knew you're smarter than that.

Actually I'm not, full time like a live axle? Or...?

Full time = no hubs that you can unlock (I think jeeps do this, not sure)

Non-full time = the axle is separated from the wheel by the hub, and you can unlock it, therefore leaving you wheel free to do whatever (D28 or D35)

Many if not most Jeeps are not full-time 4wd. Even though they have drive flanges in the front (which can't be unlocked) they often have a vacuum-actuated disconnect in the front axle. The transfer case is not meant to be locked in 4x4 when on pavement, making them part time.

Full-time t-cases are designed to be locked into 4x4 even on pavement, while part-time is not.

A part-time 4x4 setup may or may not have locking front hubs.

Since my rig is not a dd, I welded the rear and put a locker in the front, there by getting around buying two lockers and still welding something. Just my 2 cents

Like Dishtowel said, without hubs. Like an electric set-up but the hubs are always locked. If you have that and try to weld it, good luck trying to steer.

I feel stuipid. I knew that.

Yeah, a lot of the Jeeps use that. The Waggy 44 I have is set up the same way.

Just like permantly locking the vac hubs
