Our 2001 Ranger XLT is knocking and is about to throw a rod. It has a 2.3L now, but as I've been pricing engines the 2.5L is about $500 less. Can we use the 2.5 and what are the differences.

The 2.5 and 2.3s are entirely different engines. You'll need a different transmission for a 2.5. You'll also need a computer, probably a wiring harness, and probably several other things I can't think of at the moment.

I highly doubt a 2.5 engine, transmission, and computer alone would be less money than a 2.3.

I just saw on the V-8 section that the 2.5L doesn't have the PAT's, that might really complicate the wiring swap over. Why two different four bangers anyway?

the 2.5 is the lima based engine. SOHC, 8 plugs, old design. the 2.3 is the duratec, DOHC, aluminum, 4 plugs, new design. the 2.3 has more power and better fuel economy. going to the 2.5 would be a downgrade.
