I think I have finally found my engine. My friends has a ford windstar van with a FWD 3.8 v6 in it. So it should bolt right into my 3.0 trans. What are the performance differences between the 3.0 and 3.8? also what about the 4.2? i know the 4.2 is just a stroked 3.8. I want to put the best preforming v6 into this ranger and i think this free 3.8 is the way to go. if the 4.2 is that much better ill convert it.

Should i have to worry about the ranger trans under this power? im using now 5R44E/5R55E not sure which.

The 3.8 is not that much more powerful (under 200 hp) the trans should be fine, as always trans coolers as always money well spent. As for the 4.2 comment, the 4.2 used in the F150 is not the same as the 4.2 used in the 04 and new Freestars. Now if you would like some decent torque the Freestar 4.2 has 268 ftlbs at 3600 rpm the horse powers is not much more with a peak of 201 hp at 4200rpm, but it pulls like crazy and has plenty of go pwoer thru 5300 or so rpm. I am not sure of redline on the motor, I beleive 6000 rpm but you'll never need or wait to get there. You set this engine up in a Ranger run 411 or 512 and matching 33 or 35s and in 4low you will pull stumps or the whole dam forest down. Just to give you the twist my 06 freestar responds well for it size and it's "final ratio" is 355, and I would be comfortable pulling the 3500 lbs max with the van.
