no particular year is much better than another, but I'd be looking for a ranger axle. The spring perches and shock mounts are different and have to be re-welded in the correct places.

If you can find one from an FX4 L2 thats the best, direct bolt in, 31-splie, LS

Get one with disk brakes and a limited slip if possible. Any of them is gonna be wider than the axle you have now.

Disk brake equipped 8.8" rears out of Explorers are considered the most desirable ones, but you may have to change your master cylinder to use them. And you'll have to change the shock mounts and spring perches.

The FX4 ones are considered the best simply because they are more or less a direct bolt in, but they're also a lot harder to find.

There is nothing wrong with a drum-brake equipped 8.8" rear. They *can* be converted to disk, but IMHO, I probably wouldn't bother.

It will be slightly wider than the 7.5" rear in the BII. It's the same width as a D-35. Something like an inch or two wider if memory serves me correctly.

thank you sir. so it will be a disk brake 8.8 . Now to go to the tech page and get the codes for saturday morning play date at pic n pull. also can i just use the ex master or do i need the booster too thank you again

I'm not sure if there is a difference for the booster or not. I'd probably just take the master, booster, and any proportioning valve that may be there and use the whole thing.
