Found an 86, make an ok DD for $850. Only reason I would buy it would be to use the motor and tranny for a ranger at some point. I was wondering, would this swap would be 100% the same as a tbird swap? Seems like everyone use's ones from tbirds. If I even thought about doing something like this I would want to use the same setup as most people are running on here so I could have stuff to reference. Like the wireing.

yes its the same my truck originally had an 86 Xr4ti motor in it... its the same as the thunderbird just check the ecu numbers against the TCs but i think even that should be the same

don't use the tranny. it's a t9 and a downgrade from the ranger tranny.

oh wow. My wife's first car was an 85 XR4Ti. It was crazy fast and it handled like it was on rails. I always regretted selling that car... Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

I have an 86 in my door yard that will be my swap donor. The only difference on the Merkur's are they use a small VAM and have a different computer. They also arent intercooled, so the engine runs a bit de-tuned from the TC's 2.3. But swap in a big vam, and up the timing (if its an auto, they run 10 degrees instead of the manual's 13) and find a svo or TC computer and beat on it!

Ill miss having the chance to beat my merkur around town, but the soft rear frame and the tottal lack of rockers kinda forced my hand to do the swap to the ranger.
