If puting a 289 or 302 in a 4x4 1st gen ranger. Is there an auto tranny that would work ans still keep the 4x4?

A C6 would be a good option.

I used a C-4 with a C-5 output shaft.Dipstick in the case.Bolts right up.

if you want overdrive you can look at the AOD - the overdrive replacement for the C5. It will take a $500 adapter to use a stock Ranger transfer case, or you can use a full size transfer case if you get an NP205 or are willing/able to clearance your frame for anything wider.

You can also use an E4OD, which is an electronic OD version of C6. That will take an engine computer, meaning fuel injection, sounds like you're doing carb. Same rules apply as AOD for mating to transfer case.

I'm going the AOD route myself, probably swapping in a gearset from a 4R70W. Mine is a DD so overdrive is a must.

$500 sucks but If I were to do this it would be the best option because it would be a DD also. Where is this adapter? Thanks for the help.

The A4LD is the OD replacement for the C5. The AOD is the replacement for C4 and FMX. The A4LD derives from the C3 and the AOD derives from the FMX. The C5 and C4 are the same thing, essentially, so it's easy to make a C4 work with a Ranger t-case by using the C5 bits.
