My 99 Mazda B3000 3L V6 4x4 is making a funny knocking noise when it starts each morning (in the cold), or when its been sitting for a few hours.

One day it just wouldn't start and I had to pump the gas and hold down the clutch together to finally get it to start.

I changed the oil which smelled of gasoline and that seemed to help a little. Any idea what is wrong with it?

I know 146000 miles is alot but its a great little truck and I love it. I want to make it last!

Well 146000 miles is the recommended break in time for a 3.0L engine. you should get alot more use out of that...

It almost sounds like theres something wrong with the fuel pump or the filters really clogged, when was the last tune up and fuel filters.

with the limited info you gave us if it was my truck i would do a fuel pressure test at the sharader valve. koeo and koer. I forget what the pressure should be i think it is somewhere around 60. I am sure someone will chim in with the exact #'s. the fuel pressure regulater and fuel pump is in the tank....also it would not hurt to change the fuel filter if it is old,
