I have an 88 ranger gt that came with the 2.9

It now has a 302 from 1987 and I just used the alternator that was with it to use on my current setup.

However Im putting a new 302 with nice and shiny parts. And I was wondering what type of alternator to use. I remember something of OBDII or something like that.

Also where could I go to buy a polished aluminum alternator that is compatible.

If you have the stocker, you have an internally regulated alt. The Mustangs of that era (86-93) also used an internally regulated alt so just find a polished alt for a '86-'93 Mustang and you'll be good.

Ok great!

This alternator is going on a carb setup and a mallory ignition distributor.

So I shouldn't have an issue there either correct?

If you plan on running any serious electrical stuff and/or want a better looking alternator and some cleaner wiring, you might want to look into upgrading to a 3G alternator. They are basically one wire hookups and I think the smallest one puts out close to 100 amps. Might be something to look into.

Not sure if the connector is different on an '88, but I used a 130 amp alt from a '92 or so Taurus. (same connector as later Rangers
For two reasons, my Ranger alt mounts like an Explorer, in the wrong direction, and the alt from my donor car had an external regulator, which would be a backward step to use for me.

3g I look into it.

Thanks for the input everyone
