How do you figure out your axle size and transfer make and case size on your 1st gen ranger? I've got a 1983 4x4 w/ a 2.8 at t5? I looked on my vin but it doesn't give that info. Anybody got any info? Thanks:icon_confused:

You have a 7.5 rear axle and Borg Warner 1350 transfer case. You can find out what gears you have by looking at the tag on the front or rear diff.

You also most likely have a TK 5 speed tranny, not a T5.

Reason I say this is because 99% of first gen Rangers came with 7.5 and BW1350.

+1. That's about all they put in the first gen's 7.5 and 1350. T5 has never been an option on a ranger. You can get one in there if you do a 5.0 swap, but they were never stock.

Front axle would be a Dana-28

If the original door sticker is still intact, it will give the axle code and you can look up the code on the chart in the tech pages on here. That will give you the axle size, weight rating, and gear ratio.

That is, providing everything is factory on the truck and nobody has altered things yet.

Thanks a bunch guys:icon_thumby: I know cars, just not 4x4 stuff. But I'm learning quick here:headbang:

Good, we are a community all about learning, even if its by doing it the wrong way first.
