I am looking for a GOOD USB to 9-pin Serial adapter. Since majority of new laptops don't have the 9-pin serial on them, my work needs to find an adapter that will interface with some of the old fire alarm panels we deal with.

Anyone have any experience with them and have a recommendation for them?

If you can't go through it or around it, then go over it.
I bought one like 10 or 11 years ago because I bought a compaq computer that only had USB..... no serial or parallel ports....... cost like $60 and I got it at Office Max...... kinda like running a widows program in an emulator in Mac OS 7.x. its really slow, but it gets the job done.

Do you know if that one activates all 9 pins of the serial port? From what I have read, that is the problem with the majority of the adapters, they don't activate all 9 pins.

I have tried several adapters on a voice mail system and none worked.
Gave up and found a OLD laptop to just program the older phone systems.

The problem is buying old laptops is just as expensive as buying new ones.

i hate that new laptops dont have serial connections on them.
i have personally used this one:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dynex®+-+16"+USB+PDA/Serial+Adapter+Cable/7135664.p?id=1110263657278&skuId=7135664&st=usb to serial&cp=1&lp=1
and 3 of the other guys i work with use them as well with no complaints. install drivers, and ready to run. i've used the usb to serial, then serial to ethernet to console into switches for work a few times.
i think some of the voicemail guys at my work use the same one i use for many VM systems, but i can't confirm or deny if this usb to serial energizes all pins. sorry :/ ?

I might take you up on that in a couple weeks. I got a refurb Dell that had one on it, but I will be having to buy another soon.

just making sure - which connection do you need - plug a serial device into a usb port, or a usb device into a serial port? i have the usb device into serial connection, and after re-reading your post, im' not sure that's what you need.

if the ones i have are what you need and you'd like them, just shoot me a PM

Our IT group at work just ordered a new HP for me that has a DB-9 port built into it. Just for the reason that some of our old Air Fuel controllers need to have all 9 pins communicate. I have never found any USB to Serial port adapters that work on all 9 pins. If you find one I would love to know who makes it so I can get one too.

many times the problem with a keyspan is not that all 9 pins are not communicating, it is that you also need a nul modem cable

here is what i use to program the following
sprint protege, & vmail
taderan
sprint emerald ice

the USB to DB9 interface cable would not communicate, had to also use a nul modem cable between my keyspan and unit i was trying to communicate with...all keyspans are the same and you could by about everyone from every company and if one does not work, non of them will-i had this issue and chased my tail with it for a while.

get a short USB to DB9 adapter and also a 6ft 9 pin nul modem cable...tiger direct has the best prices
