Question about backflushing the heater core

There are 2 hoses coming from the firewall...one goes into the t-stat housing and the other goes to the top of the water pump. Which one do I disconnect and reconnect to a garden hose? Am I correct in that both need to be disconnected...one reconnects to the garden hose and the other is used to drain into a container?

Also, anyone know what the inner diameter on the hose is? Will a standard 5/8" female garden hose connector work?
 
I have never flushed a heater core.. What seems is the problem that would lead you to think you need a heater core flush?
Most heater problems with a 2000 would be a heater gate and not usually a plugged heater core..

or you or whoever else had the truck used several different kinds of coolant which COULD not saying it is but could clog up a heater core and if your flushing the heater core you might want to get some coolant system flush and run that through the system. but the real question we need to be asking is why do you need to just flush the heater core? why not the rest of the system? was the heater not putting out enough heat or was the fan not blowing very high when you had it set on high or what? normally if its bad enough to flush one part of the coolant system then the rest of the system will need it. just my two cents.

and to answer your question you will need to run the hose through both hoses to make sure straight water comes out if you were to only run it thorugh one hose it would only get part of the heater core cleaned out.

to answer your question. hook the garden hose up the the one that goes to the water pump and drain the thermostat hose into a container. i usually swap between them a few times to further break sediment free.
 
There aren't any problems with my cooling system...now. I just replaced the water pump and t-stat because both were starting to go bad. Not bad considering they were the originals that came on the truck when I bought it new and the truck now has 210,000 miles. I plan on flushing the entire system using the cooling system flush stuff that I have used in the past. I've never backflushed the heater core and I want to do it so that the entire system is clean.

I see what you guys are saying about alternating between hoses. It makes sense to do it that way to thoroughly clean it. I'll try that out when I get around to doing everything.
 
it makes me feel good when people do prevantiave maintaince on their own vehciles.
