SAS Spring questions

I've been reading the thread on EB coils and most of the information for finding the correct spring is laid out for a TTB suspension. If some one could tell me the formula to figure it out for a solid axle suspension that would be sweet. I'll be a big boy and do the math, just what's the formula?

For reference:

2000 Ranger SuperCab 3.0L

Axles going in are a full width HP Dana44 and a Ford9" from a 78 Full Size Bronco



And if anyone can give clues to the uncompressed height and compressed height and spring weight for 6" of lift that would be pretty sweet too.

you need at least 3 out of 4 pieces of info to find out the other for each spring.

if you have a compressed spring, and want the spring rate, you will also need the uncompressed length and the amount of weight on the axle.

divide the weight that on the axle by 2 to get the weight on the spring.

take the length uncompressed, minus the compressed length, and get dx.

take the weight on the spring and divide it by dx. (weight on spring)/dx. this will give you your spring rate in pounds per inch.


if you want the compressed length of a spring, you need the weight on that spring, the spring rate, and the uncompressed length.

take the weight, divide it by the spring rate, and you will get how many inches the spring will compress.

subtract that from your uncompressed length and you will get your compressed length.

this will help you do the math. as for getting the numbers you need to start with, i am sure that others will chime in.

essentially what metalMac said is use hooks law: F=kX where F is the force on the spring (weight on the spring), k is the spring constant (spring rate), and X is the distance the spring is compressed. if you apply a force of 50lbs to a spring with a 25lb/in spring rate you'll have compressed it 2 inches. use and abuse it buddy lol

I have a leaf spring question. I have a 99 ranger and a set of 89 wagoneer dana 44 axles. I am putting leaves front and back. I want to run a 36 to 38 inch tire no bigger and no smaller. I tried to talk to a 4x4 shop about which springs i would need to get and he almost sh!t his pants. He couldnt believe anyone could lift a truck without a kit and told me putting 2500 dollars out for a 5inch lift and keeping the ifs would be a better choice. He can suck it. I want to know which leaves whether jeep, blazer, whatever type of springs I should use, and what amount of lift would be necessary to make it level and sit high enough to fit the 38s. I can figure the rest out on my own. Thanks.

it depends I guess. I got on Superlift's site and emailed their tech crew asking for the spring specs. They replied with everything, free length, compressed length, and spring rate. also included their tolerances for the free and compressed heights. I'd start by trying to get ahold of the spring companies and see what they have to say

Pretty sure it's just you. I agree that the stats are sometimes hard to find, but you need to look harder.
