i may be in need of a new tank for my '87 supercab. i have a tank and sender from my '87 longbed that i parted out, the tank is like new (only had it in the truck for a year) autozone says i need this tank but i already have this tank. can anybody tell me specifically why i cant use it? looks like maybe the fuel sender is positioned differently? they each use a different sender but i have the one that fits the tank i have. suggestions?

The tank is a different shape.

I've never actually tried to put a longbox std cab steel tank
into a supercab in place of the factory 14.5gal tank so I don't know what the exact issue is.

When I decided to replace my fuel tank I switched to
a PLASTIC tank from an '89 Supercab.

Doing this involved modifying one frame crossmember,
replacing a second crossmember
and installing a third crossmember that my truck never had.

The reason for replacing the one crossmember was because
the location of the tank vent required the crossmember change.

i've got a tank from a '91 explorer, any chance it may be close enough i can make it work? what are the issues with the fuel pump from one style system to the other? thanks AllanD....i knew if anybody would know it would be you

The std cab 17gallong MAY fit, but you'll have to try it to know.

The explorer tank won't fit.

The explorer tank is wider because they widened the explorer frame
aft of the tranny crossmember, and the tank was designed to make
use of the available space.

well it looks like the biggest difference is the fuel sender placement. i dont mind having to shorten lines (looks like i will have to) but i wanted to know why ford thought they had to move the sender for the supercabs, maybe something would interfere?
