Is a 4.0 from a 1991 ranger the same as 4.0 from a 1994 b4000?
Is it a direct swap?

harness for the sensors and pigtails are not the same

they're both the same engine though right???
so what would be involved in dropping that motor in if all the sensors and pigtails are different?

i am pretty sure the sensors are for the most part the same and as far as the long block i am sure that is the same as well unless one has an EGR and the other does not
as well as CA and NY emission built may vary from other states as well

well then.. probably a larger job than anticipated..
The simple solution here is to swap long blocks. Keep both original manifolds and emissions retrofits won't be a problem.

What about the valves and rockers??? can they be swapped? My engine has the tick and seems a little tired... theres alot of kms on it... and i found this rebuilt 4.0 out of a 91 for cheap... i just want to make this thing work.. so what are the main differences between the two motors, what components cant be swapped???

I have run into the same problem as you. I want to put a '92 4.0L into a '93 3.0 L. 1993 started the third generation Ranger, which had subtle changes. The main problem for me is the wiring for the engine and the body. in the donor '92 Ranger, the wiring is split into two separate harnesses, one on the driver side and one on the passenger. my 93 has one large harness that has both the body and engine wiring. I have read that you can do the swap, but not without a lot of cutting and splicing of wires to get it all to connect up right. You can buy wiring diagrams to help you, but it could get very complicated.
As far as swapping components, it seems like the best solution is to take everything from the donor that you can. I'm no expert, so I would definitely find out exactly what is swappable. Read the Tech Library about Swapping a 4.0L, there is a lot of good info in there giving the basics of the swap.

yes the engines are interchangeable just transfer all the sensors from the old motor to the new motor.

Sounds good to me :)

So was this ever confirmed? I need a replacement engine for my 94' 4.0 ranger and I need to know which years to look for.

i think the 94 has a cam position sensor and the 91 dosent

This is a year old post.....but I'm gonna help anyways.

Yes certain later 94's had a CPS. That is no big deal though as ALL 4.0's had the spot for them and actually just use a cover on the earlier models that bolt right over that hole.
In a sense......for any years between 90-97 they can be interchanged....the short blocks that is. SO.....just swap your sensors....like if you have a CPS and other stuff...like your CKPS, or EGR and your intake manifolds over from your original engine. If you want split years 90-94, 95-97, and 98+. The 98+ had a few changes with the head. Like the exhaust ports. Idk if an earlier manifold will bolt right on....or if you used the later exhaust manifolds, that it'd line up with your y-pipe. If you're not afraid of maybe a few exhaust mods....then a 98+ short block could probably be used too with the same deal of swap manifolds and sensors.

Well hey, at least I tried searching first!! Hahaha
Basically what my issue is, is that I have a bent valve in the driver side head of my 4.0 and the truck is missing and is very underpowered. I need to replace the entire longblock. I'm fine with swapping over an intake manifold to make it work, especially since the engine will be out of the truck anyway.
I also am picking up a nice set of Doug Thorley headers and y pipe from a local guy tonight for cheap. I'd like to be able to run this if at all possible as I know it's good stuff. I'm ok with having to make a new y pipe though if necessary. The other problem is that these headers and y I'm buying were on a 2wd truck and mine is a 4wd.
