I have a 94 b4000 4x4 and I was wondering what should I put in the transmisson its a 5sp I have been putting gear oil in, someone told me to put atf in it what should I be using???
I know its a stupid question just wanna make sure.

Thanks

I always have put 80-90 in the transmission and type F atf in the tansfer case. Seems to work well for me.....

I have read a lot of posts about this subject and I have come to the conclusion that if you have the m5od you should be putting Mercon in it.........

Mercon ATF . . .

Is what is recommended for my '94 B-2300 5-speed. When I read that you could have knocked me over with a feather! Never heard of such a thing. However, I refilled mine with 2.5 Quarts of Mercon and so far so good.

A 1994 truck should use ONLY Mercon ATF. Period. I don't know why people find it so hard to believe that a manual trans uses ATF. A LOT of manuals use ATF nowadays. You better hope you didn't royally f*** up your trans by putting gear oil in.

Kdowney for $10 and 20 minutes you might want to flush it again. And to be clear it is Mercon NOT MERCON V.( this recommendation comes from info i gathered on these websites. I believe Ford stopped making Mercon in 2007 and recommends Mercon V in it's place. anyone please correct me or offer a different suggestions if you disagree) Power steering is Mercon also.

ps. this does not apply to later model cars that the owners manual clearly states Mercon V

Transmission Fluid

Modelageek: You are absolutely right. My Hanes manual warned me NOT to use Mercon V but regular Mercon. I had also read this here in this forum. When I drained the tranny prior to the clutch change-out, the fluid came out black. I wasn't sure what it was. Having worked mostly on older American cars, I always used 80W-90 gear oil in a manual tranny. Hey, if it was good enough for Grandpa . . .

Fortunately, I followed directions and poured in Mercon ATF. Like I said, so far so good.

I plan to flush it again with new fluid as soon as I can get my daughter-in-law's P.O.S. Intrepid out of my garage.

Good advice. Thanks.
