Door strikers

anyone know if there is a sleeve on the rear hatch striker? my rear door wont shut tight .

Go to the local autoparts store and go to the "HELP" section. They sell the there. You may have to drive the big washer off the striker bolt but they work well.
 
I've been meaning to get one of those...I rigged up a temporary one with electrical tape and it worked for awhile until the tape tore off. I haven't figured out what causes this, my other BII closes just fine without the bushing. I even swapped the strikers but the problem stayed with the vehicle. Mine will shut on about the 3rd try if I slam the sh!t out of it but that's getting old.
 
The left side of my hatch doesn't want to close unless you slam it, and my passenger side door rattles over heavy bumps too

I've got a new striker and some bushings and stuff that I was going to try and fool with this weekend. I'll let you know if I find anything that works well.
 
yep, it's the left side of my hatch too. Right closes just fine.

If I don't get it closed all the way, the dome light flickers on and off on hard, accelerating left turns as the hatch makes and breaks the dome light switch.

I just avoid opening the hatch whenever I can. I've got a truck to carry stuff.
 
My 86 is the same way, I just apply a little left shoulder to it till it latches and go on my marry way. maybe some day I will look into the problem.

i have to hip check the right side of my hatch to make it latch, the left side has about two inches of play, i don't think it's even latching.

thank god for the spare tire carrier to keep it from flying open, heh.
 
I used a piece of reinforced rubber fuel hose over the bolt on mine as a temp fix (which seems to have turned into a permanent fix lol).
 
I added bushings to the rear strikers. . . "HELP!" makes them in a 4pk. . . the two longer ones in there work. I'm not 100% sure how long they'll hold up, as the bushing on the left of the hatch shows where the latch grabs onto it after only a few closes, but at least it's closed very tight, and does not rattle in the least - for now.

Also, "HELP!" code 38445 (I think - going off the top of my head here) of the Ford striker bolts are the ones that are put in the doors. I replaced the passenger one, and it's pretty solid now. I tried replacing the driver one, but I was doing it while it was dark, and it didn't want to close right unless I SLAMMED the door. I'm probably going to have to take the bushing off that one and maybe that will do it. . . I'll figure it out tomorrow.
 
I should add I still have to slam the hatch some to get both sides to close, but when they do, it has no play in it like it used to.

I have to go over 5 RxR tracks every day back and forth to work, so that rattling took a toll on me fast.
 
what the hell is up with this left side not shutting right? mine does the same thing, i have to lay my entire body into the door to get it to latch. it rattles everytime i take off in first gear. i've even cracked the back door in a couple places closing it.
 
My left side is the same. The bushings are worn, but I think it's a combination of the bushings and the gate being misaligned. The previous owner replaced it. The people he bought it from didn't didn't know how to close the spare tire carrier without slamming it, and cracked the he&^ out of the hatch. I'll frog around with it one of these days.
 
Go to the junkyard, get good looking ones off another vehicle, just make sure the nylon bushing is still on it, My hatch wouldn't latch before, then I replaced them and now it shuts, although I do sometimes have to slam it to close the right side all the way, but it's tight.
 
Damn I wasn't even sure if they had bushings before. I got mine sans bushings so I thought they came that way stock. Good to know

This. A chunk of 3/8" split lengthwise works great.
