To start, I've done searches, but they never come up with a definitive answer.

1992 Ranger 4.0 4x4 125wb

The issues I have are:
A/C clutch engages/disengages causing my idle to drop and then overcompensate.

So, I unplugged the A/C compressor and now when I'm coming to a stop the idle doesn't like to come down below about 1,100 RPM so I'm fighting the engine/transmission with the brakes when I'm stopping, but after I have stopped it comes down to about 700RPM.

Another thing is that the automatic transmission seems to wait until I'm almost completely stopped before downshifting into first, so when I do finally stop it "clunks" into first and makes the truck lurch a little.

The other day I was doing my front brake pads, and had to turn the wheels hard over to one side. When I did this, with the engine OFF for some reason the power steering fluid cap blew off and spewed a bunch of power steering fluid under the hood all over everything.

So there are 3 issues, any ideas?

As far as the idle goes I figure some type of intake air leak maybe a vacuum leak?

Turning the wheel with the engine off will usually blow the cap off of the fluid reservoir, it's completely normal.

So simply don't turn the wheel with the engine off.

As for the transmission and idle?

have you tried cleaning the IAC?

As for the A/C, you can turn the compressor off you know....
1992 still has the capability of manually defeating the compressor.

I think it's a "press in on the knob" click-on, click-off deal...
That too is probably related to your idle solenoid.

the transmission is probably not unlocking to torque converter as you decel.
That could either be a computer problem an internal transmission problem
OR your TPS may be faulty.

A/C goes on/off regardless of the button being on/off I think that's because it needs to be recharged (it doesn't blow cold)

Where is the IAC on this truck? Easily accessible?

Same with the TPS, where's that located?

Thanks for the quick help Allan!

The A/C should NEVER go on if the switch is off.

That's what kinda defines "off" as being "off"
If it doesn't blow cold and is low on charge then it also should NEVER switch on.
There is a system dual function pressure switch that should prevent it from running.

the IAC is the Idle Air Control solenoid bolted to the side of the upper intake manifold

the TPS is the Throttle Position Sensor mounted to the throttle body.

*Should* and *Shouldn't* ... my truck doesn't seem to follow these rules, A/C clicks on/off all the time when it's plugged in. Why? I dont know, so I unplugged it.

I'll check the IAC right now, TPS might take more digging to get at so I'll have to do it later.

Cheers!

Allan, I have one of the earliest Explorers in existence and a second-year 4.0L, and even my control head has a cute little override switch under the defrost position.

On Ranger's starting in 97 iirc, the ac cycles on and off no matter if it's off or not.
Ford did this so that during long periods with out use it would not just sit there and go bad.

New issue, I cant rev above 3k and RPM's rise slowly.

This is in "Park", is there a rev limiter for P and N?

it helps if you say what year your truck is

Yes, there is a rev limiter for p and n. Ford did this so retards wouldn't blow the motor from reving it up.
Why would you want to rev past 3 grand?
Also it helps if you make a signature and include info about your rig.

I just made this account, havent got around to updating the profile.

I would want to rev past 3k to check for hesitation.

It's a 92 Ranger 4.0 4x4 auto
