Ok so I have everything out of my 88 BII and 92 Explorer... I already have the EVTM for the BII... Explorer EVTM is on its way (that reminds me i should probably pick up a Chiltons too)... I am planning on putting in a set of Autometer gauges with a custom dash piece but that got me thinking... does the Explorer computer need to read anything from any of the senders? Temp? Pressure? Anything like that?? --Daniel
 
No, the senders are just for the gauges. The computer has sensors for everything it needs.
 
That is what I was hoping for... I'm really overwhelmed looking at the wiring but I think I'm starting to figure it out...

I just want my baby running... should've never sold my 89... or at least not before finishing my 88...
 
Keep at it.

Be methodical.

when you are done you will probably have a greater understanding of
how it all goes together...

This is why the wiring took me three full weeks on my 1993 4.0 conversion
of my 1987.

I wanted not to "just" get it running
I wanted as much of the 1993 wiring under the hood as possible
because I actually understood how much of a cluster-**** ford created
when they failed to design the ranger from the beginning as a V6 vehicle
and when going from carb to EFI they didn't rectify some of their screw-ups.

(look at how main power is actually routed between the battery, alternator
and fuse panel on an '86-87 2.9 and you'll know what I mean)

that and individual relays mounted on little spring brackets everywhere...

And all the little fuseable links....

I got rid of all that crap.

I also used the wiring for the ABS system my donor vehicle had
to provide load center mounted relays for my Fog & Driving lights

I also added another relay box so that the Brake and marker lamps
are all run off of relays...

It is definitely easy to get distracted... but I'm sticking with it. The more I read my manuals and see what's in front of me the more sense things are making... just wish the BII wasn't 40 minutes away...
 
methodical is definitely the key. im no electrical engineer but when i look at a wiring diagram for a car and see how much crap is intertwined im like wtf were they thinking when they did this? in my 92 2.3 2wd truck my whole gage assy except the odo/speedo is skrewd and im going w/ a complete set of autometer gages myself including elec speedo conversion and trust me there will be a lot of rewiring done to simplify the gage system. eventually will be redoing the entire wiring harness and doing a short harness too. as far as looking at the diagrams etc and the a.d.d. kicking in i kno wat u mean...lol.
 
I managed to do 99% of my splices in the section of the harness that was
eventually going to be hidden behind the washer fluid/cooland reservoir.

Understand that I'm also speaking to the non-posting "Lurkers"

Basically my take on dealing with wiring on a Gen1 to retrofit a Gen2 engine
starts with understand the differences.

Gen1
the main harness goes into the engine bay through a gromet
and then there is a cluster of small connectors


The Gen 2 has a big bulkhead connector

When putting a 4.0 into a Gen1 start with pulling the old EEC and
harness out, installing the new harness and installing the computer
in the passenger side then working around the engine compartment
from there back to the drivers side gromet.

There are some things you'll have to keep and a few serious problems...
like where to put the EDIS module...

Exactly HOW to do it isn't impossible to do... but...
