I scanned my friend's 97 Ranger due to engine light coming on. I help the kid because he's helpless. The code said oxygen sensor BANK TWO, but he has a 4cyl. Does this mean the rear sensor? In other words isn't there an O2 sensor in front of and behind the cat?
He will spend money on sushi for his big titted girlfriends, but too cheap to just get both sensors lol.
This happened after I changed his rusted out gas tank straps and had to take a sawzall to the bolts, I think the vibration might have done the sensor in. 185k on the truck.

Yeah, probably the rear sensor. Either that or you have one very confused PCM.

I'm thinking that Bank 1 and 2 are loosely used to describe passenger and driver's sides. Bank 2 being passenger. So replace the one off the manifold. It's the most important and actually dictates fuel delivery. The one behind the catalytic converter is just to make sure the cat is doing a it's job.

But, before you just replace the sensor, check the wiring and fuse.

Thanks-2 different replies. I'll tell my friend just get both. I told him don't wait till the last minute to do this. I said do this now while it's still warm outside. So he waits until it's 19 degrees outside, with 2 days left to get his truck inspected.

bank 1 means the sensor in the exhaust manifold, and bank2 the one near the catalyst.
thats what my mechanic told me once...

What exactly is the code. There is no "replace oxygen sensor" code. There are lean/rich codes, lazy response codes, no signal codes. You need to know which one before replacing the sensor. It could just be a wiring problem.

Thanks for all the replies. I had scanned it up at my friends house, told him to save the code. He lost the code, but I remembered basicly it said oxygen sensor bank 2. This kid's father passed away suddenly on a camping trip. It devastated the whole family. They live next door to my brother's house, his kids grew up with them. I have been taking care of that family ever since, over ten years.
Anyway, he got both sensors, and we tried the downstream one first, it was damaged, ( I broke it off so I could get a six point socket on it), check engine light went out, he returned the unused front sensor, passed inspection the next day. Thanks again!!!!!!!
