I have a 97 2.3 ranger the instrument cluster had no tach. I got a 95 instrument cluster with a tach. I am following the recommendation to move wire 8 on connector C216 (black/yellow) to postion 16 on connector C 214. Are the 1997 and 1995 instrument clusters interchangeable?:dunno:

.

I'm not sure on the compatibilty by model year, when I did mine I took my non-tach cluster with me to junkyard to compare to others. I followed the traces from where the wiring harness plugs in and followed where they went to and checked to be sure they were the same. The board is somewhat labeled as to what each wire does. All the wires from the connector still went to the same gauge. If I remember correctly, the tach cluster had a dual layer board on the back, making it tricky to follow the traces.

Another thing... check to be sure the black/yellow wire is grounded. On my '97 the black/yellow wire was there but not connected to anything. After I grounded that wire and switched it the other connector it worked great.

I think it's a pretty good chance that the cluster is the same.

Thanks, for the input! I am putting a Lokar shift system in for the C4 I will use. I got the cluster off Ebay and went ahead and fitted the shift indicator (PRNDL) into the cluster with the tach. I hate to have to redo that as it turned out pretty nice! Cash for clunkers has made my life so easy, lot of explorers etc for the year I am looking for...
