How much is a powder coat on a frame?

Where would I go? Also, do I give it to them rusty and dirty and they clean it up and then powder coat it, or do i clean it up and then give it to them? Price differences?

Also, can you do it yourself?

I'm interested in keeping my 88 for a long time, like i'm 17 now and plan on hopefully giving it to my son? I know it's a stretch, but I'd love to pass it on. So I know that I will need to keep everything as fresh as possible.

In 92 I had the back section of a datsun truck frame that I made into a trailer powder coated & back then I had to have it sandblasted by a different company then the powder coater & the cost to due the back section of a Datsun truck frame was $75 @ the powder coaters & another $50 @ the sandblasters

Powder coating is only as good as the prep work and far more effective if ALL the riveted brackets and joints are seperated before it is applied.

The other issue with powder coating is that it holds water IN as effectively as it holds it out....

Ever notice how frame brackets have their paint peel off in one piece?
That is factory powder coat peeling off.

Frankly I'd LOVe to take my spare frame set and have it acid dipped to remove all the corrosion then have it dipped in molten Zinc.

a real Hot dipped galvanizing job like a guardrail post...

How do you think that would hold up?

would it be more worth it to just sandblast it? that should take off a bunch of impurities and crap right?

i'd love to just get a brand new frame... that's not gonna happen.

If you already the truck taken apart down to the frame and are considering your options, I would probably wire wheel it and then just paint with POR-15 or something.

no it's my daily driver and won't have money for probably 4 years to get a new daily driver haha... just been pondering kind of.

The cost will vary among coating companies, but I regularly have motorcycle frames and their attaching pieces (usually around 20-30 pieces including frame and swing arm) coated for about $350 - $400.

Depends on the company. Some will have in-house blasting and baking, others may not. The one I go to bakes the pieces in the oven to burn off oils and the like, then they sand blast, clean, and then coat. However, I take my stuff to them already cleaned and sandblasted, lets me see how the parts look before I give it to them to clean and blast again.

You could, if you had an oven big enough to put your frame in.

I got 2 uncles that does powder coating..One in Chattanooga Tn(http://www.autocyclepc.com/)and the other is in Manchester Tn..I know its long off for some guys on here but they do custom work and is good ..

The Thing is I actually HAVE a spare frame
And there's a place here in PA that has
a big enough zinc tank...

I've also systematically replaced the rivets in the frame with
appropriately sized fine thread bolts, mostly 1/2" but some 5/8"
