5.0L or 5.0L HO everyday driver? 2Questions

Just wanted to know what people who have big lifts-33" tires or larger are getting for everyday gas mileage out of there V8 swaps?

#2)

also wanted to know for someone who is doing an extreme trailing, mudding, and rock application would it be better to have a 5 speed or automatic? granted i realize its all preferance, but thought ide ask for opinions...

Well... i don't know about gas mileage but the trans is up to you. some people prefer autos some prefer stick... They both have advantages and disadvantages... I think an autos good cause you don't lose any speed when it shifts vs puttin the clutch in and shifting. But I like a stick so you can hold it in the gear you want.
 
what about sticking an auto in 1st or 2nd for when you need those higher beginning gears? Would that suffice for most of what i need?
 
Manuals will be more reliable and wil offer better mileage, especially if you go the T-5 route (street driven). For an offroad manual, the M5OD-R2 would be a little better suited. I'm assuming this is a 4x4? (then the M5OD-R2) But it is about personal preference, and really YOU should be the only factor in deciding that particular part of the build.

Mileage depends greatly on driving style. Go real easy on it, it get's better, etc. we all know all that allready. Unfortunately since you do have a V8 in things, it's a little harder to "stay out of it" if you know what I mean.

By the time you build it for "extreme trail, mud and rock" mileage usually goes out the window. We all strive for the magical best of both worlds, but that won't happen unless you have a special kind of building talent (sorry).

Sorry to kind of rain on your parade a bit, but if mileage is a large factor ion the build then stay stock and put a good set of gears in it. And for driving around just try to stay out of the throttle.
 
my ranger has a 4 inch lift with 3 body:annoyed: and 33" tires and a 5.0 ho, auto c-6 tranny with 3.73 gears on the freeway at about 65mph at about 2,600 rpm it gets about 15-16 mpg but if i had say a 5 speed or what not id say it should be a couple more mpg..

I think either stick or auto can do well for offroading 4x4 it just depends on what model transsmission you use i think would make the most difference..
 
Mine is a lowered street truck, so it's not what you asked about.
But I get 16mpg when I drive the snot out of it. That's the same as the 4.0 that came out.
Best I ever got with the 4.0 was 21mpg, and the 5.0 gets better mileage than that when I have the stereo on.

Maybe because you're not listening to the exhaust note, which causes you to step into the loud pedal more than necessary?

Heck, I roll my windows down just so I can hear the pipes better.

an AOD or E4OD would do fine for off roading. be better than a stick if you had a switch to lock up the torque converter in any gear at any speed...... just remember unlock it before you stop or stall.
 
I have an 88 302 out of a Crown Vic with the AOD that is stock in an 88 Ranger on 36' Swapmers. My gear in the truck is 4.10 but with the tires it equals out to a 3.54. I can not run my truck in overdrive unless I am on the highway going over 60, less than that it pops in and out constantly due to the gears. A rough guess is about 17mph empty, with my ATV it is roughly 14-15mph. I do a lot of mountian driving and back road driving. If I get it on the highway and use OD I can get 17 to 19mph. I dont run it super hard so that helps me out. I have other toys I can use to run hard and get the need for speed out! :D It does ok in the mud with the AOD but I wish I went with a stick for mudding and or hauling.

well maybe for know since i have the automatic stuff ill just stick with it and if i don't like it ill convert over...and as for gas mileage....

going from a 3.0L probably(hoping i get 10miles a gallon) toa 302 getting 15MPG, will be oh so much better...and nowing that when i push on the gas it goes will be even niver. i hate trying to converge into traffic and feeling like my little ole hard working 3.0l is about to die on me...(thank goodness it hasnt though)..fingers crossed it stays that way till i get the 5.0l
