How old to register as classic?

Im in Texas and ive heard your car has to be either 20 or 25 years old to register it as a classic. Does anyone know for sure? My truck is going to be 20 next year and itd be nice to not have to worry about emissions. thanks
 
i know in illinois it is 15 or 20 for classic and 25 for antique. but the bad thing about antique plates is you are only allowed a certain number of miles per year. the antique plates are only like $25 every 2 years or so .
 
Every state is a little different, but I'm pretty sure it has to be at least 20 years old in most states. Unfortunately, as already mentioned, there's some pretty strict mileage rules about antique plates. Check out your state's RMV website and they should be able to tell you more.

and at least in NJ you need to have specific antique/classic car insurance as well
 
doesn't it have to be stock to register it as antique? I know thats the way it has to be up in BC
 
In PA I think it's 10 years for classic and 25 for antique. You need to send a picture of the car and a short letter saying why you think it should be registered as such (condition for age, out of production, etc.). State inspections are no longer required then but you are limited to how many miles per year you can drive it.
 
Why are you asking the board?

Ask your state's registration authority, or you're pissing into the wind.

And it's really nasty to try to avoid repairing your gross polluter that way. That's not the intention of the antique rule. We all have to breathe the crap you shouldn't be emitting. Fix the damn thing.
 
Passenger vehicles and light trucks in Texas that are 24 years old and older, do not have to be emissions tested, but they do have to pass a safety inspection.

Also, emissions testing is only required in certain areas/counties. Houston, Dallas, and El Paso. Check the TDOT site for details. shady
 
I guess I'm lucky. Columbus does not require any type of emissions testing.
 
Here in montreal it's not even worth it. You can't go over 80km/h (50miles/h) and also there is limited mileage. This is only for the people who have an old antiques car that they take to carshows and back.
 
isnt Quebec also the one that crushes your car if its been modified? They say for street racing, but basically any mod can be twisted to say youre racing it and itll be crushed.
 
i know here in nj you can modify it
my uncle has a 66 chevy on a diff frame and 10 inches of lift
im sure its ok in ur state
and theres no inspection

Not crushed but you will get fined. The town next to mine were stuck with a real civic infestation. Peaces of crap cars that would hold together with bondo, a loud ass muffler and a subs bagging 24/7:flipoff:. They got tired off it so the police would pull them over one by one and they would order for an inspection. They would bill them crazy : Not fuctionnal hand-brake, burnt out light, sound system to loud, muffler not for street driving.... It would go so high that around 5 civics where impounded and never bought back from their owners (a buddy of mine was one of them). The word spreaded out like the flu. They don't go driving around there anymore
 
I'm not sure if you need classic insurance to register as a classic (im sure it varies state to state), but if you do some companies require the vehicle be kept in a (locked?) garage. It varies company to company on the mileage also, depending whether its strictly driven to shows or if you take it out for a nice sunday cruise, or drive it to work to show it off occasionally.
