I have a 96 4.0L 4x4...so i have an 8.8 right? But i have 33's and 3.73's. crappy combo. I found someone selling a 7.5 with 4.56's and a detroit locker! I wanna buy it but how much of a downgrade is it? I don't do intense wheeling, just some climbing mudding ripping around in snow and stuff. And if i get just the diff (middle thing, pumpkin, third member? what the correct term?) Will i need to swap my axles and brake stuff and suspension and everything?

First, you WILL break that 7.5 rear end with that engine. Thata why ford gave it the 8.8, especially with 33's, second, that pumpkin/3rd member WILL NOT fit in your axle housing at all. Third, you need to regear the front aswell or it will buck in 4wd and you will break stuff quick.

I do have a brand new set of yukon 4.56's for sale never installed. If your interested, PM me.

Ford never even used 4.10's in the 7.5" behind a 2.9 or 3.0 with a 5sp trans.
Why? because the 4.10 7.5" pinion has a nasty tendency to shed it's teeth.

If you want 4.56's you want them in an 8.8"

Dang, I was thinking so. And I'm aware of that bajabronco lol but i also was getting a Dana 35 with the deal so it was good. And consider yourself Pm'd

I'd see if you can just get the 35 if it's cheap...

Yup, thats my plan haha, also you sent me a blank PM :dunno:
