1985 Ranger 2x4 5spd. manual tranny.What is the part my speedo cable screws to then this part goes in tranny?can I do away with it and hook cable directly to tranny?How?

Why do you care?

FYI, that's probably the cruise speed sensor, especially if there is an electrical connector on it.
