Air conditioning compressor question

I was working on another problem when I noticed that my air conditioning compressor was engaged while I had my heater on. If I just turn my vent on (one click to the left) it doesn't engage but if I turn on any of the selections to the right it turns on. This is with the heat selector turned all the way to heat. Have any of you noticed this or have any ideas?
 
Ok, I was just surprised that it did that. This is the first time that I have seen that happen.
 
Unfortunately I didn't get an owners manual with this truck. It's also missing the ashtray.
