1998 Ranger HELP!

I have a 1998 Ford ranger 2WD 3.0 V-6 with 5-Speed. Well when i push in the clutch to come to a stop at say a red light or stop sign the engine revs up to 3000-4000 RPMS slowly until i come to a COMPLETE stop. WHAT is making this happen? I was thinking the throddle position sensor but before i go changing parts that i have no clue whats going on i thought i would ask the PROs here at TRS
 
Could be a vaccum leak. Check the PCV elbow, Intake tube for tightness/ integrity, etc.

Clean the IAC (any solvent, dry, reinstall). Clean the MAF (search). It may help to force it to relearn its idle after that. Disconnect the battery, turn the headlights on / off, reconnect battery. Start the engine, let it idle for 5 minutes (must be fully warmed up for this). Then turn on the AC, let it idle 5 more minutes (hopefully your compressor will be cycling on/off for this), and you're done. Automatics get idled in Drive as additional 2 steps, AC on/off.

You must understand, it WILL hold the rpms up (mine sits right at 1100) while it is seeing speed. Once you stop, it SHOULD drop. Mine idles ~800 when stopped.

Yours is excessively high while rolling.


If you don't do the idle relearn, it may take several days of driving to improve the idle after cleaning.
 
Clean the IAC... mine does this exact same thing about once a year. When it does, I spend more time looking for the damn can of carb/TB cleaner, than I do cleaning out the valve.
 
Were is the IAC located? IF i take a picture of underneath my hood can you guys point it out?
