V8 swap on a budget, I've got the engine, but not sure what I'd need for the rest. Is there a trans ect that would bolt in for the most part/ not need to be torn down and have things changed. What T-case would be used, would the stock axles ever hold up to a v8 ? The truck would pretty much be an off road only vehicle. I at first hoped it'd be easy since I have an engine, but I don't know anymore.
 
You know more than we do right now! What year, motor and just some more info on what you have and what you want to do would really, really help.

heres a list:


fuel pressure regulator (to keep stock fuel lines/ pump)
oil filter relocater
bigger radiator
possibly E-fan (depending on clearances)
a good 8.8 or a 9" (fullwidth or cut down depending on what its used for)
at LEAST a D44 in the front (again Fullwidth or narrowed, your choice)
custom driveshafts ( you can make your own)
custom drop brackets/ spring mounts
 
hmm, the motor came out of an 87 mustang GT, I have the 8.8 from my Fullsize bronco sitting in my driveway with trashed pinion bearings. Did see a dana 44 sitting at the junkyard a couple weekends ago, came out of an older solid front axle truck. That could be had for a decent price I bet, how about transmissions and T-cases ect ? Plans would be off road only.
 
Still, what year truck you got, want EFI or carb? Manual or auto trans?

Doing my V-8 p to EFI was cheap but still cost me some $$$. As for the motor I had a 120k 88 5.0 from an 88 Crown Vic. I used the harness, computer and trans for the Ranger. The car was 500., the tranny with adapter to hook up to a stock Ranger transfer was 1300with a rebuild. From there I spent maybe 1800. maybe more dont have reciepts added up yet. I had to get a radiator and electric fan, manifolds from and Exploder, shifter, oil relocator kit. I also resealed the motor, tuned it up, replaced all gaskets, hoses and had the front drivshaft made longer. I run an 8" lift. I am in the process of swapping out to an 8.8 out back and a D-44 in front. I am sure I am missing a ton of things but you get the jist of it.
 
i'm still in the process of building my 86 ranger but i got a 85 towncar 5.0 hooked to a 85 c6 tranny and a old cast iron np205 t-case. oddly enough the 205 t-case fit perfectly in the ranger. i converted the motor to carb used a mechanical fuel pump and ran new lines to the 'return' side of the fuel pump module. i have had the rear driveshaft made as of now but as of total i have got about 1500 in the entire swap. i have found many a deal on craigslist. lol

You DID remove the rubber check valve from the return line didn't you ?
 
yeah put a new strainer on it too. it runs good.
 
Just checkin, I did the same thing but with a frame rail mounted electric pump. I didn't realize there was a check valve on the return line til I pulled the pump out to disable the pump.
 
yeah i had to pull both my tanks off to clean them. the gas in them had just about turned to varnish. it was nasty.:bad:
