View Full Version : dana 50....or dana 60?

i just picked up a 2000 f250 for the axles assuming the front was a d60, i was doing a little research and found out that ford used a d50 in alot of those trucks in 2000... does any one know how to identify the d50 from d60? and does anyone have any info about the d50 at all? i know that this is probly not the best forum to post this in but its for my sas. thanks

Dana 50 = 3/4" pinion shaft size, 1 1/8" nut

Dana 60 = 7/8" pinion shaft size, 1 5/16" nut

Still stronger then a D44, and there should be lots of parts available in the junkyard. I used to be opposed to unit bearings at all costs but they are easy to change, and hold up fairly well under a heavy fullsize. I'd just grab a spare or two and go nuts. Only issue is getting stuck with the superduty metric bolt pattern, but lots of rims are available.

ha the truck came with a 6inch superlift and 37inch mud grapplers on 20s...BLINGIN.... but i picked up a almost new set of ground hawgs mounted on some nice aluminum wheels so i dont look like a douch bag....not that i have the cash to even concider it but will a 60 locker work on this axle?

Every locker I've found between the D44/D50/D60 all have different P/N's so I'm gonna say no, your gonna need a Dana50 specific locker.

Dana 50s are actually very strong, saw lots of TTB 50s in snowplow trucks and the only thing they ever broke was the L beam. funny how they break instead of bending when the springs are bottomed out :)

better off finding a D60, might be able to sell those axles as a pair or trade the whole truck for a set of new axles or something.

Could be a wreck, blown driveline....700xxxmiles etc. It's not uncommon to see dirt cheap high mileage trucks for sale 'round here either.

+ 1 . I regularly work on Super Dutys with in excess of 400 000 KM. If you look hard enough, you can buy a gas SD 4x4 with high, high KMs for less than $5000.00 .

you guys would shit yourselves if you saw what i paid for this truck. it was a wreck every body panel but the tailgate was worthless. it was beautiful... 80,000miles. the truck was in "new" condition.
