I checked the codes and got none :icon_confused: i guess its a good thing but my mileage is around 13 and that's with the 2.3. What else could be sucking away my mileage? it's not leaking as far as i see (most of the marks where from the olds LOL) and it not burning it either, and its not going into the oil. plus its loosing coolant too :annoyed: right before winter too.

Checked the codes on what? Is it 4x4? Is it auto? Is the bed loaded with anything heavy? Is it a ranger? What marks are form the olds? Whats it not burning? Is the IT thats not going into the oil, the same it thats losing coolant?

This aint a camel we're talking about is it? Winter slows them camels down pretty good. Is it a camel with manual hubs?
 
1987 Ford Ranger, 2x4, standard cab, short box, TK 5 tranny, just a toolbox in the bed loaded with my tools (not many), the marks from my 1995 olds cutlass ceria are oil (about 7 gallons of oil), coolant (2 complete refills), tranny fluid, brake fluid, and power steering fluid. now back to the Ranger the IT is the gas,
it doesn't seem to be burning the coolant but it's losing it plus I'm getting around 13 MPG (I didn't think it could get that bad :dunno:) I'm getting no smoke signals out the exhaust, and no wet marks in the parking spot.

any idea's
 
If its driving rough, then I would say you have a bad MAF or some other emission prob. Have you messed with your exhaust at all? Does it still have cats or o2's? Does it do anything funny hwile driving? FYI if you get on it all the time, shifting above 3k then you will lose alot of mileage. How much would you say the box of tools weighs? 2-300 lbs will really have an affect. It could be more than one of these things combined. What gears do you have? factory? WHat size tires?


My 92 got about 12 mpg with a 2.3 but it had a bad maf and no o2's sensors, I always got on it and I was running 19" wheels on the back with 275/45/19's.
 
it doesn't drive rough that I can think of. Of course I had to get it running after it sat for 8-10 years (fuel pumps, filters, plugs and wires)
the exhaust was rusted out up to where the cat was (original owner removed it)
so I welded on a new pipe that lets out at the cab corner the one O2 sensor is newer, the toolbox weighs about 180 LB's with my tools in it.
the truck sputters every once in a while like it looses ignition power.
My gears are factory as far as I know most of the truck is factory
the fronts are 195/75/R14
the backs are 225/70/R14
the rear tag reads

I was getting very shitty mileage in my old pickup that had a 2.9, turned out to be a bad fuel pressure regulator and coolant temp sensor. Not saying yours are gonna be bad but it's something to check.
 
Replace the maf, also my exhaust was setup the same way without cats. You also need to drop the tank and clean it out thoroughly, remove the intake and clean the injector thoroughly. I would replace the coils with one from a junkyard for cheap just to verify that your getting full spark. Go through the entire vehicle and check all your ground wires. Also change gear oil and tranny fluid, even if its a 5 spd, dumpit and refill it.
 
I haven't check the coolant temp sensor but the FPR is good, I've checked the coil, the injectors I haven't checked,I'll check the MAF sensor, I have a couple braided ground wires that are just hanging so it would be nice to know where they went (please). I've also cleaned the gas tank it was nasty :sad:
I've added gear oil to the tranny but the diff has no drain or fill/check plug WTH is up with that?

You have to pull the diff cover to change the fluid unless you get a vacuum pump and pump it out through the fill hole, which is on the front of the diff near the pinion.

BTW your truck is speed density, so no MAF
 
UGH! I was on my way up to a store in burlington when my truck got loud, and lost power for some reason well limping to a pull off on the highway after that I stopped and let it cool down after that I check all my fluids the coolant was a little low but not bad, the oil was low and my PS is low :shok: so I drove to gas station to get some oil to get back home well at home tomorrow i'll do the compression test (to dark right now:annoyed:) I hope the results are good
