I was replacing the ball-joints on my 2000 Ranger 2WD yesterday when I noticed that the boot around the lower end of the steering-shaft was torn in several places. A torn boot is what caused one of the ball-joints to deteriorate, so I thought that this might be a good time to fix this problem as well. It does not seem as if this boot will just slide off. I searched around, and all that I could find is a complete replacement steering-shaft from Ford for $275! My questions are as follows:

1. Can the boot be replaced by itself?

2. If not, can the steering-shaft be removed without loosening and/or moving the steering box/rack?

3. Does anybody know of a cheaper alternative to the Ford part? I prefer Moog steering and suspension parts, if available.

Thanks.
