Hey guys I really could use some quick help.

I ordered new shackle bolts and nuts fromthe ford dealer to put on my new leaf springs. everything came good in the package except for one weird thing. The nuts that go on the shackle bolts look oval! I mean the flared washer type base looks round but the nuts themselves look mishapen. Is this normal? Are they designed to torque on and flatten or something like that?

I need to know right away! Like 15 minutes if possible!

Thanks crew!

My guess is its a mechanical locknut. Got a pic?

Here's what I mean sorry for the crappy cell phone pics

Look at the side with the washer on it, it should be round. If its a mech. lock nut it'll thread on ~1/2 way easily (like a normal nut) then you'll need a wrench to tighten it the rest of the way. Try it with the bolt. If it starts by hand your good :icon_thumby:

Thats exactly how it is, thanks!

yup, mechanical lock nuts....REMEMBER they are one use only......

can get away with maybe re-useing em' one time, but wouldn't recommend it

Oh yeah, on the one use thing that is why I bought new ones, I wanted to make everything new.

Yeup, that is how Ford does lock nuts.

I reuse those things all the time. Just put some Loctite (blue) threadlock on them if you reuse them.

Yeah those are a version of locking nuts. I have had them so tight that they started stripping the threads off the bolt they were supposed to fit. I don't like them myself.

a good old lock washer and red Locktight guarantees nothing comes loose.

Well thanks for everything, I'm tearing into it this weekend. Hopefully the weather clears up by then, if not I gotta ger it down to the shop with one new leaf and one old. This is why I love TRS. I got all the help I needed quick. This is the best forum I've been on, we not only have a good quantity of members the quality is also there too:D
