well i bought a 93 explorer well i was told that the trans wouldnt go into drive well i was able to get it to go and i drove it ive miles and parked it well i changed the filter and fluid and drove it around then i parked it for a min and when i went to go out again it wouldnt go into drive

everything else works rev works but drive wont in any of the gears 1st 2nd D OD

o yeah has 121000miles

Forward clutch failure. Needs a overhaul.

Could be one of two things: sticky valve, or blown seal at the clutch pack. If the fluid was very dirty, I'd bet on a stuck valve. Try idling it for a while to get the trans up to temp and see if you can get it to pop into drive then. If you can, run the piss out of it, then change the fluid again. Then run the piss out of it some more.

Failing that, get a book and start troubleshooting, or swap it out for a reman.

fluid wasnt real dirty or smelled burnt

and if it is a valve how would i fix it

Easiest is to replace the valve body.

There are quite a number of failures that can come on suddenly, a blown seal (or broken splines or broken clutches or whatever) being one of them.
