:dunno: has anyone used any of the performance chips such as jet, superchips and so on and so forth? im interested in seeing what real people are getting from the chips or programmers. :icon_cheers:
thanks in advance :icon_thumby:

I have been looking for a chip mod for sometime. I have found a few resistor(i thnk) designs HERE (http://www.engineperformancechip.com/ford-performance-chip-ford-ranger-1990-2008-c-10_280)Then there is the computer(electronic) mod. Is one better over the other? Would I be able to put a variable resistor on the intake sensor and use that, I think that is all these are... Are computer mods safer? Would the local 4-wheel shop likely have the computer programmer that they could plug in for a small fee you think?
Thanks for the info.
BTW. I have a 2005 ford ranger 4.0XLT
THX!!!

I think those resistor chips are very damaging to the engine. They send false signals to the processors and then they lean or rich the fuel out, and that could be very bad for the engine. I think the processor mods are safer they program the processor to work correctly with the signals from the sensors.

ok so my next question would be, which one would be better. there are many programmers out there. does anyone know which one has an advantage over the other? right now im looking at a superchips cortex. but i have seen a few others, since i have not seen any specs on any i would like to know from owners... if anybody's got 'em and have specs on their boost, that info would be great!!!
THX

I know for Diesel there really big improvement. not quite as much for gas.
the biggest improvement from what I have seen is smoother throttle response and more even power band. on the newer trucks its not to be able to fix your speedo for over sized tires :icon_thumby:
A friend of mine has v12 Excursion and it was noticeable
before that he had a Diesel Excursion that he programed, oh boy be ready for burn the rubber off the tires. well that was he did claiming the he lived on.
I have a James Duff in my 87 5speed not so much more power, but nice even power all the way to red line not really the slow poke truck anymore.
PS. I should add that the three trucks had oversize exhaust and the Excursion's had oversized intake add before the programing was done

I had a JET Performance Chip on my 94 2.3, biggest waste of money ever. IMO. I have heard good things about the JET chips on the 4.0, but I am still skeptical.

got a bama programmer. I gotta say it works pretty good. Had some other people drive my truck and they'll say the same.

Ive been trying to find a programmer for my 93 4.0 but cant find anything on it, i wish it were like a diesel, tons of them and huge gains my dad has a 06 cummins stocks 330hp 610tq on stage 3 outa 5 on a edge programmer its around 400 hp 800tq just insane. Im thinking the 5.9 cummins in a ranger would be " the bees knees" :)
it would be, but not looking at programmers anymore doing a v-8 conversion.

I have a Jet Programmer for my 3.0. Improved my throttle response, both low end and high end, and improved my mpg from 18 to 21 highway. It also doubles as a scan tool, which is nice. Truck runs smoother too. The only issue I have with it was it was soooo dang expensive. But if I had to do it again I still think I would still buy it.

Ya, I have a BamaChips Tune for mine. I don't really see any big power "gains" so to speak. What's most noticeable is how the power is distributed now. The power band is better for my style of driving, especially the 93 performance tune.
Speedo compensation, shift points and powerband are the noticeable changes, again I wouldn't really call it gains. Maybe a HP or two, MPG is still about the same. But the drive ability is a noted improvement.
Do to delivery problems, if I had it all to do over again, I would not have used BamaChips and gone with Hensen Performance (http://www.hensonperformance.com/). I ran across James on another forum, he's a straight shooter and I've not heard anyone say anything negative about him. He's eager to consult with you, he'll even call you at home after hours. You give him a list of your mods, a few numbers off of some conspicuous labels and the octane ratings you want it programmed for. He'll program a SCT X3 with 3 preloaded programs and ship it to you. You hook that to the diag port under the steering wheel, download your stock tune then upload the new tune. When you change between tunes, you don't even have to to go back to stock.
I can only speak for newer trucks, mines an 02.
