Anyone tried using a transfer case on there 2 wheel drive as an underdrive? basically to compensate for big tires and have more gear speeds? Im seriously considering this mod. I would like to know what to look for in the jy since i'd like to do it myself and use a manual shift transfer case. Will 2nd gens work in a 3rd gen? 2nd gen is more common in the jy.

I wouldn't do it for all the time driving.... solving one problem(incorrect axle gearing) would likely bring to light new problems(heavily wearing on components in the tcase). You'll need a 4x4 trans and a new rear shaft too.

Just do a gear swap in your axles.

Actually it has been brought up, not sure if anyone actually has gone through with it.

But yes, you could easily install a 4x4 trans and T-case into a 2wd chassis, you'd just have to shorten the rear driveshaft or get the 4x4 one.

A manual T-case would be the easiest to swap in.

Actualy, you might be able to get away with something similar to the doubler (possible concern for strength). Manual 1350's are a billion times more common, so hack off the front output half and just run the part with the gear reduction. And then you don't have to worry about the front output shaft sealing.

I've wanted a low range in my 2wd for a long time, but I decided to go for the gusto and make it a full blown 4x4. It would be heaven to be able to use reverse at a controlled speed lol!
