Is this right? I have a 96 Ranger with a 5 speed Manual? do I refill it with mercon atf? mercon 2, mercon 3? which is it?

Yes, Mercon (or Dextron III, the GM equivalent).
Look for labels such as "Dex/Merc" and "Domestic Vehicle ATF". The bottle will say that it meets the Mercon specs.
Don't use Mercon V fluid however. In spite of statements that it's backward-compatible with Mercon, there have been numerous reports of it negatively affecting the shift quality on the M5OD.
