I had a 02 Ranger towed to my place yesterday because the rearend was out of it. It is a FX4, one owner and 65,000 and some change and it has not been beat on. He does not do his own maintenance (IE oil changes, tire rotations etc.). When I got the truck I imediately pulled the cover off the rearend to tally the damage. As I pulled the cover a chocolate brown colored fluid came rushing out. With that moisture being in that rearend it took out both carrier bearings. There was also alot of shavings and metal the the oil as well. I can not stress to you guys who do your own maintenance to check your fluids correctly, even the ones who don't stress to your shop that does to check EVERYTHING. By the time I am done he is going to have to by a new R&P, install kit, axle bearings and seals.

Check the torsen closely. The early FX4's had a weak carrier. Mind you, water in any diff doesn't help.

water? differential?

you mean like this?

Check all your fluids

Gee, WS , how'd that happen ????:dunno:

I had a 05 FX4 coming once for a rear diff noise. Went to take off the cover and about 3 litres of clear water came out, then that grey "oil". Service manager was standing behind me at the time. Warranty denied !!!!!
