Built it last winter to use as my tow rig/DD when ranger is down.
Specs:
79 Ford on 85 F350 4x4 frame. 11,000 gvw.
Dana 60 front, sterling 10.25 rear 3.55 posi.
Alcoa alum wheels, 89 Cummins 12valve, 96 NV4500 5spd, NP241 transfercase. Slip yoke elim, custom made intercooler setup, 60mm turbo housing, 4" stainless exhaust, train horns. Future upgrades are a DennyT fuel pin, 3200RPM gov spring, and some bigger injectors. I also bought a PTO and hoist to make the flatbed dump but haven't had time to install yet.

Don't suppose you want a 12cm wastegated turbine housing :bye: ? The stock 21cm housing a lag monster.

Being the motor is a 89 it has a non wastegated 18cm onit now. I'm thinking of going to a 16cm.

That think probably has mad torque !! What is it a Cummins 6bt ? God I'd sell my niece and nephew for a rig like that (sorry I don't have kids of my own to sell) :icon_rofl:
My pops owned one with that same orange color (don't know the yr) but I asked him about it since getting more into the Ford trucks and he said it had a 390 in it.. Man if he still had it and sold it now I would seriously buy it from him.

Yes 6bt. It hasn't been dynod but it is prob close to 500ft lbs from what I have read online based on other people with the same mods. But hopefully if I can sale some of the extra axles and stuff I got I will be able to buy some new injectors and exhaust housing for the turbo plus install my other parts I already have waiting for it and I should be around the 600ft lbs area. :headbang:

NO, don't downgrade wastegates!!! your housing pressure will skyrocket.
Just upgrade right and proper..... never down-grade.
I'd do an HX 35-40 hybrid if you couldn't afford anything better, btw I hit 65psi with my old hybrid running from the cops, and cracked a head............... they aren't kidding when they say 45psi max on those.
but then I upgraded again (yes the proper word is upgrade!!!!!) to O-ringed heads, 200hp injectors, blablabla a crap ton more money, and an industrial injection 66/71 with a 3 in downpipe.............. aaahhhh much better.

Whats the difference between a HX35-40 hybrid and my H1C with a 60mm inducer housing and wheel?
Frank The Tank
09-15-2009, 12:27 PM
the hybrid is just the HX 35 exhaust wheel, with an hx 40 inducer wheel.....
it spools as fast as a 35/35, pulls the air of a 40/40, and doesn't have the shaft snap from turbo "bark" associated with the 40/40's. the 40 wheel is just a jag bigger than the 35 inducer wheel.

Yea, but what is different between my H1C and a HX35? I know mine originally was a 50mm inducer and 18cm exhaust. now it is 60 and 18. And a HX35 is 56mm and 12. being I shouldn't downgrade the exhaust housing why is the 35-40 better? Are the rest of the internals better? Why does the 35-40 build more boost than mine and cool better?
Hahnsb2
09-16-2009, 02:16 AM
The H1C uses a V-band on the compressor housing and 4 bolts on the exhaust housing, instead of a bolted on compressor housing and 6 bolt exhaust housing on the HX35. Both the H1C and HX35 have had various compressor wheels and turbine housing sizes.
The WH1C has a 8 blade 56mm compressor wheel and 12cm wastegated housing (the W in WH1C) and was only using in 94. I have a WH1C with a 21cm housing from a H1C that I'm going to be using in my Dakota.

So being I already have an upgraded impeller housing would there be any benefit to switching to the HX35?

Those are very nice trucks. Now if they look that nice. Do they work that hard? showins nice but Id want one to use. The red one looks like a very, usable dependable towin rig. Id kill to haul bales otta the field with that. Uncles 6.0 chevy lacks the low end grunt for what he puts on the trailer. even in 4Lo

I've loaded it down with scrap steel and ran out of room before I had the flaps dragging and it still hauled and stoped like and empty truck. When I pulled on the scale I had almost 6K on the bed :D. Guess I'm gonna have to find something heavier to haul, I wanna see what it take to make the flaps drag. :icon_hornsup:

I wanted a 4x4 dually which Ford didn't make untill 84. Plus the sterling rear is stonger than a Dana 60 or Dana 70. Plus, the cummins fits in the newer frame without cutting the crossmember like on a 79-older frame and the newer chassis uses crossover steering which handles much nicer going down the road.
I also a bigblock guy. That black F250 has a 460, the wrecker has a 460, and the grey and silver F250 has a 429. Thats why I used a Cummins, I got tired of 4mpg :D

Ok, I've had some requests for build photos
Here is the donor truck 89 dodge 3/4 ton 4x4 114K miles had brand new 727 in it PO had a little oops in the snow. I also bought a nv4500/ transfercase, bell, clutch etc from the same guy for $300! It came from a 96 he parted out.

here is the other doner truck 85 F350 4x4 dump POS 351w/ 4spd I chose this truck becuse I wanted a 4x4 for dually which wasn't available untill 84. PA is strick on inspection laws so I didnt want to make a 2wd in to a 4wd. Also being I was swapping a 5.9 I needed to be imission exempt (9,000 GVW-up) and I knew I wanted a dually so this worked nice instead of making a 79 f250 into a dually I am a legal heavy weight class and immison exempt.

after teardown
sold the 727, np 205, doors, gate, seat, both axles fuel tank. Ended up getting the motor for almost free!

painting up frame and swapping rear axle. The dump had a chipped ring gear and open carrier plus some broken leafs so I bought another f350 for the posi rear and new rear leafs.

got a set of alum wheels for it at a local junkyard but they didn't come with the lugnuts. I ended up paying $4 per lug nut ouch! Either way they look alot nicer than the rusty steel wheels that were on it.

I chose to put the body on first because I wanted to center the wheel in the wheelwell and get it all bolted down then I could modifey for firewall clearance if needed.
next it was time to start fitment, I used the stock dodge rubber mounts from the 89. I then slotted holes into the large engine crossmenber in the Ford frame and the motor sat right down in level and I didn't have to do anyother mods other than trimming the excess bolt the stuck through the bracket for the tracbar on the rear of the crossmember so I had proper oilpan clearance.
I had to pound the firewall in a little for valve cover clearance it could have been elliminated with a body lift but being this is going to be a work truck I wanted it to be stock height. I then stripped cab a prepped for paint.

Cab was edged in including the firewall. The motor was then painted and put in then the front clip was put back on for the final time.
Everyone always asks why it is CAT yellow.
The motor was supposed to be Cummins Gold but when the paint dryed it turned yellow. We thought it was funny and desided to leave it alone because it would really confuse people when they looked at the motor.

Here is is right after I built the stacks. The stacks are made from heavy wall stainless pipe and all welded together. They give it a nice deep tone and don't sound tinny like some cheap stack kits. Plus even after I drive it for all day they aren't hot enough to burn you if you would touch them getting out of the truck. Also here is the first pic of my new headache reack its from a Chevron tiltbody I had to cut it down a little but it wasn't too bad.

I like it...... can't beat the mighty NV-4500!!!!
those 70psi boosted 4x4 launches on water meth in 3rd got me in trouble though, I advise a cryo'd 3rd gear and at least a bullet proof input shaft (out of the NV-5600).
2001.5 Ext Cab Dually sled puller.... uhm built a little bit.
I highly recommend a south bend dual disk clutch......
I smoked 4 single disc aftermarkets before I wisened up.
