Parts needed for regearing?

im not real familiar with gears but i need to regear my truck because of tires and i need to know when i buy new gears all i need to buy is ring and pinion right?
 
If you have to ask this question, I wouldn't plan on doing it yourself, until you have read up on this quite a bit...

But if your having a shop do it, thats all you need, yes.

Also, what size tires and what gears do you have?
 
yeah im not doing it my self. i have 3:73's with 32's.
 
4.56's should work out well, although you may rev a bit high on the freeway at 70.

If a shop is doing it, if you provide a ring and pinion, they should be able to handle it. Most shops stock shims n such.
 
so what am i lookin at as far as price? do shops charge ridiculous amounts to install the gears?
 
If you pull the front and rear axles yourself the probably won't charge as much. Gear installs are tedious work. I wouldn't look for the cheapest guy to set up gears.
 
well looks like my parents are going to help me out with cost so now i have another question. the main reason i am doing this is because i have a 4 banger on 32's getting 10mpg. would the improvement in gas mileage and power be worth the money? because i know that the carb on my truck is a bit big but i havent gotten around to doing anything about it so i know that may also be a big factor in the bad gas mileage. but i just want your guys input and opinions on whether it would be worth the money or if i should just start with smaller things such as replacing the carb. thanks
 
are you sure your speedometer is correct? if not, you are getting better than 10mpg... I get 10-17 with my turbo engine...
 
no my speedometer is off i know that but does that make a difference in gas mileage? i literally get about 100 miles off of my 10 gallon tank then i have to fill up again.
 
Because your odometer will be off as well then.
 
wow im dumb. well ill track how much i drive and try and figure it out. regardless how much of an improvement do you think ill see with lower gears? worth it or not?
 
I just realized you had a 2.3 with 32's and 3.73 gears. If I were you, I would go with 4.88s, 5.13's even. Changing the gear ratios is going to take off some of the stress put on the vehicle by the bigger tires. Whether it effects your gas mileage much or not, it's going to help your engine and transmission.
 
yeah, I concur, 4.56 would probably be fine though.
 
I'm putting 4.56's in my Ranger after I finish my head gaskets. I have a 4.0 with 31's...I think it's going to haul ass.
