What would an 8.8 with 3.73 gears and a posi be worth? Its out of an 89 Ranger GT and I want to make an offer but don't want to insult the guy. He is asking $400 for it. Is that too much?

I just did the calculations and that comes out to $362 US dollars. That's WAY too much for an 8.8 IMO. I paid $266 for mine.
 
I gotta agree with Tom on that one. Wait on it and you can probably find a 31 spline axle w/ LS for that price or less.
 
I have one I tried to sell yesterday for A hundred bucks 93 ranger 8.8 3L.73 gears complete
 
I don't think a '89 would even have a 8.8...

I paid $100 for my 8.8 and got the springs with it, I had to pull it out of the Explorer myself though. 3.73's with a limited slip and disc brakes.
 
price at the local you-pull is $100US. for any rear axle. See them listed for anything from $150 to $400 though.

I got my 31 spline 8.8 with disc brakes for around 80 bucks. Go to a big pick a pull yard for a good deal thats where i got mine
