got an 89 ranger. on a cold start the engine fires right up but it runs real rough. let it run for a little bit and the rpms slowly to start to come down and it eventually dies unless u give it gas to keep it running. then once it dies, nothin. try to start it and the starter is really struggling to crank it over. im thinkin the motor is toast. what u guys say?

What is missing when it won't start (eg. fuel/spark)? Figure that out, and you'll be worlds closer to determining the problem. CEL? You might pull codes to see if there isn't anything ovbious. Do you have any pressure at the fuel rail once it's dead? Does anything happen if you disconnect the IAC?

dunno bout the dieing and starting issue, but the tick is probably the injectors. They are really loud on these engines. Do you know how to pull codes? Its really easy.

X2, pull codes before you condemn it.
