My odometer is not working. The speedometer is working OK. It's just the odometer. Can the speed sensor cause this ? I have a 1996 2.4L, manual trans. I see another sensor on top of the transmission. Does anyone know what it is for.
Thanks for any help,
Jim

Well I found the problem. The small worn gear that turns the odometer wheels was mush. Seems Ford has hard plastic for the wheels but the worm gear is a soft plastic that deteriorates with age and causes the odometer to fail. The worm gear can be obtained from http://www.odometergears.com/ford.html . Very helpful folks and fast service, I called on Thursday and had the gear on Saturday. The only problem I had was replacing the speedometer dial. On my 96 the speedometer is electric (no cable) so when you replace the dial and start the truck it may show, as mine did 30 MPH when it sitting still. To correct this connect the cluster without replacing the lens and start the truck. Then gently replace the dial at the minimum MPH. My 96 starts at 10 MPH. Then remove the cluster and replace the lens and re-install.
Even if you replace the entire cluster with a newer or different cluster the worm gear needs to be changed as it will fail at some point.
