4X4's can be prerunners. I am building my 2000 4X4 into a prerunner using the Dixon Kit. This is probably considered mid travel rather than long travel, but 14" of coil over travel is a substantial improvement over 6"-7" of tosion bar travel. The rear suspension options are wide open.
While the Dixon Kit will not work for your truck, I believe that there are true long travel ttb options out there.
As for taking the sway bar off, the truck will articulate better but will have increased lean in the turns. I do not run a front torsion bar on my truck and it has a substantial lean in the corners (especially as speed increases). The fact that my track width is 9" wider than stock helps to compensate for the lean, but I still need to pay attention to how I drive the truck.
