Hey folks,

Is it common practice to re-use the old pulley when replacing a steering pump, or do you generally get a new pulley too? Just wondering, since you have to pull off the old one to remove it anyway...

Thanks.

you usually reuse the pulley, you might need a special tool to remove and install it. im sure you could find a place to swap pulleys for you

Great, that's what I was hoping to hear.

Yup, I've seen what the tools (2 different ones for removal and installation) look like. Are they pretty standard for Ford pumps? If not, can a regular 2-arm or 3-arm gear/pulley puller do in a pinch? I'm just wondering if my local parts stores are likely to have them as loaner tools.

Thanks again!

no a 2/3 jaw puller will destroy the pulley.

yes you could probably get a loaner from an auto parts store, or it wouldn't hurt to ask how much an auto shop would charge for the 15min labor of swapping pulleys. that way when they break their tool on it you don't have to "buy" it from the auto parts store
