2000 4.0L OHV questions

hey i,m new to this site i've owned several rangers 83-85-88-89-91-93-and now a 2000 not to mention put a few hundred thousand miles on a couple as work trucks anyway my 2000 has a blown head gasket and trans problems i haven't worked on one in awhile so i'm not sure what year motor trans will drop right in a hook up easily oh yeah its automatic thanks for any answers and responses
 
CWTH, I also have a 2000 although it's an Explorer.
You have a 5R55E transmission, so for a drop-in with
minimal headaches you need to find one of those.
I think they started in the 97 model year, and before that
it was the 4R55E (4 speed).

2000 was the last year of the 4.0 OHV in the Explorer, and
I would assume the same for the Ranger. I don't know of
any differences between the powertrains (Explorer/Ranger)
so you could use an Explorer 4.0 if you found one. Look for
the latest model you can find, up to 2000.

BTW, the 5R55E is prone to a shifting 'flare', but nothing you
can do except take your chances with that. It's kinda like
buying a pig in a poke:icon_surprised:without being able to
drive it.

Basically 1998- 2000 for the motor and trans... check out car-part.com for salvage yards in your area
 
thank for your responses i appericate the information it confirms what i thought i'd have to go with a late 98 to 2000 motor and the same 5 speed auto maybe it'll be cheaper to just do the heads and gaskets then repair the trans

96 was the last year of the ohv in the explorer 97 was the first year of the sohc in the explorer.
2000 was the last year of the ohv in the ranger 01 was the first year of the sohc in the ranger
