i messed up when i pulled the carrier on my 7.5 and the shims fell out and i got them mixed up. so now i dont know which one goes where and i am taking a shot in the dark and hoping this is a simple problem. its the stock open carrier with stock 4.10 gears on a 1998.

there are two shims. one on each side. one is slightly thicker than the other. which one goes on which side?

i know its probably not this simple and i will probably have to find some paint to check the pattern. but i thought i would ask just in case they were all close stock.

thanks!

Yup. 'fraid so.

You'll need a dial indicator to check the backlash and make sure it's between 0.008-0.015" (this provided you haven't touched the pinion at all).
If its way off, it'll show up in the contact pattern as well though too.

given that there are only two ways of putting it back together, it shouldnt be too hard to make sure that you have it right with the paint. this link will give you tons of info about setting up gears. specifically what to look for in the contact patter on the paint.
