Ihave done a search but did not find a confirmed answer
Will a al4d from a 92 Explorer fit into my 89 Bronco with Al4d also. Bronco is a 2.9 l. Would be an easy bolt in?

Alternate I have a 85 Ranger 4 x4 with I believe the Mitsubishi manaul. But my understanding is I would probably have to then get drive shafts modified.

Which way should I go?

If I use a a4ld from a 92 explorer into a 89 Bronco 2 is it a direct swap or do I need to change computers also???

All I can tell you is if the explorer has the 4.0 it will bolt up to the 2.9 in the bronco II. I don't know about the computer though.

needs the extra wires the tranny requires to electronically shift. You'll have to remove gently the computer & harness from the 92 and all the harnesses attached to the 92 trans. Not too sure if you need to remove the 89 and install the 92 engine harnesses also

having just done a a4ld into tk5 swap, I'd go that way auto to manual. my drive shaft ended up being cut to about 53 1/2 for $100.00

How was that swap to do I have a complete 85 Ranger with TK5 tranny. I was hoping to not spend a bunch on getting drive shafts cut and the other lengthened. Those things add up pretty quick
What did you use for a clutch pack.

swap took a lot of time, about 16 hours. You need about 4 ft of extension for the top bolts, take the transfer case off to make the job easier. My parts ranger was a super cab 4X4, the donee was a basic reg cab 2wd so the drive shaft was too long with diffeent flanges. If you have the same style of trans output shaft (splined) and wheel base it might not need drive shaft cutting. the local pick a parts place has a million bronco's with driveshafts, for about $25 ea.

It will run on the original computer, but it is not optimized.

I bought a clutch kit from Kragan for $110, had the flywheel resurfaced from the donor. The clutch kit has 3 different crankshaft pilot bearings in it, but only one is the correct one, depending on your engine/ flywheel combo.

Biggest PITA is bleeding the clutch slave, but do a search and use all the different techniques. Tech forum here has section for swaps with tons of relevant data, use it.

Thanks
I have read alot of the posts. When you say will run on original computer but not optimized what do you mean by that? I have taken out the tranny and transfer case a few times on the ranger before and got pretty quick at it.

How hard was it to install the clutch pedal?

After you move ALL the stuff on the left side of the clutch and brake pedestal, not too hard, just pissy. (hint: pop the bushing out on the firewall with the engine harness feed through). Getting all the clips and spacers and bearings back, about a 9 of 10. helps to have the seat out so you can lay on floor looking up at pedal assy. pictures of assy while re-assembling help too.

AllanD or someone more knowledgeable than me said you will lose about 10 to 15% fuel mileage with the auto PCM, haven't experimented with it yet.

a 1992 A4LD will fit and function PERFECTLY in an '89 Bronco2 with a 2.9.

But there a few subtle differences beyond the general fact that the
4.0 A4LD is "beefed up" compared to the earlier A4LD's

the 4.0 torque converter has more vanes on the stator inside it so it is
a much "tighter" torque converter.

This means you'll notice that the converter doesn't slip nearly as much
as the 2.9 converter will, and this will slightly affect low end acceleration
(just away from a standing start)

It also means that when the computer ALLOWS the converter to slip on acceleration
(when it releases the lockup clutch) it'll generate FAR less heat.

Some people simply don't notice the difference, most do.

That is what I find confusing some say the 92 tranny would work as is and some say you have to change the computer. If it does work great and if it does not I can not afford a big experiment.

I do understand later years would not work

Allan is right. You can replace the 89 with the 92 A4LD with no issues. Wireing is the same. If you had a C5 and wanted to replace it with an A4LD then there would be wireing issues.

so Ican get a rebuilt AL4D for $350 or I have a TK5 from an 85 Ranger, which way should I go. I dont really go mudding or that but do toodle in the bush and the snow. Dont want to spend a bunch of money
sounds like the Explorer AL4d would be stronger than what was in there.

a TK5 would require replacing BOTH driveshafts, relocating the
transmission crossmember... etc...

an M5OD-R1 would mechanically fit with the same driveshafts
and Crossmember position is the same.
