97 Ranger, 90,000 miles. Trans fluid replaced every couple of years, most recently a few months ago. Always use Mobil1 atf. Still running original clutch.

This truck is getting progressively harder to shift. Getting into first gear is a real challenge, no grinding, but very hard to engage. 2nd thru 5th are also difficult to shift into while sitting still, but work fine while moving. Very recently developed, reverse can not be engaged (without grinding) unless you shut off the engine first. All gears engage smooth as butter when the engine is off.

I am assuming that this all points to a clutch replacement, correct? Or is it syncros and blocker rings?

If it is the clutch, what should I do about the TOB / slave cylinder. Of course I would replace the TOB & pilot brg. What about the slave cyl? Should it necessarily be replaced too?

And I see listings for 6-bolt and 8-bolt flywheels. How can I determine which I have? I want to have all my parts ready to go before I start the tear down.

TIA,
Bob

This sounds like a clutch release problem, probably hydraulic. Find the leak. If it's in the bellhousing, replace EVERYTHING inside. Clutch, flywheel (or have yours resurfaced), slave, release bearing, pilot bearing, and maybe the rear main seal.

If it's anywhere else -- particularly if the fluid is not low -- replace the master alone.

The way to tell if you have a 6bolt or 8bolt flywheel is to count the bolts....

I have had no leaks from the clutch hydraulics. In fact this entire truck has remained completely leak free it's entire "life". Regardless, I do agree that while I'm in there, I might as well just freshen the whole thing. I've ordered a new clutch kit, slave cylinder and even a new flywheel. If all the parts are correct and arrive on time, guess I know what I will be doing Thanksgiving Day.

Thanks,
Bob
