hop up and MPG

I'm thinking of getting a new Ranger 4X2 with the 2.3L and a manual trans for the better gas mileage. I was curious about CPU changes, intake and exhaust, etc, to give it more pep, if I feel it needs it, and if these changes will actually help, or hurt MPG?

I don't really want to get into changing cams and stuff as this wouldn't be for race, just to give it more of the "Fun" factor. I know I need to keep my foot out of it, just wondering if "Stock" gives the best gas mileage and I'm stuck with that or if modified will actually be a benefit for both performance and MPG?

I could see you getting MAYBE 10-15hp from a complete exhaust swap (from the headers to the tip) and a good dyno tune, not some chip that you plug in, but a day of tuning on the dyno with someone who knows what they are doing... Don't mess with the intake... It flows more than enough air in the stock configuration... If you're willing to spend $500-700 for 10hp go for it! Otherwise opening the engine is the only way to get cost effective power increases...

What do you mean by "Opening the engine"? Cams, rockers, springs, etc, or something else? Don't have the knowledge anymore to do that kind of work, so would cost too much to have somebody do it for me. I'm trying to save money by getting this rig, so have to be careful.

Exactly what I mean... Some type of modification where you have to remove the head and/or more parts of the engine...

Basically it's like this.

Ford did almost all they could to get the motor as efficient as possible, within what was cost effective for them. So yes there are things you can do to get more power and or efficiency out of a motor, but they are going to cost you.

Things you can consider are things like tire pressure, clean air filter, driving habits, re-gear, tire diameter, weight reduction, tune ups...etc.

Tried a Ranger today and it just killed my back, so the Ranger is out for now. Sweet truck, but with my back as bad as it is, the ride just killed me.
