ok ive done alot with my exshuat now had duals for a while then no exhaust cops really hated that :icon_thumby:now its stright piped thinkin of goin for a legal sytem again whats the best sounding muffler for a 4.0?
 
After the cat I ran a 3 ft. section of HREW. 2.5" OD .120 wall. It's dumped before the rear axle.

It still has the sound of raw power no muffler, but it's quiet-er-ish, and has a damn good tone. And it won't get bent up on the trails. And was cheaper then exhaust pipe.
 
I'm running 2.5" pipe after my cat to a flowmaster super 44 on my 91 4.0L.

Nice deep tone, doesn't resonate or get annoying in the cab, and has plenty of bark when you get into the throttle.
 
I really like my aero turbine 25/25. I like it a lot more than the flowmaster that I had before it.
 
"Best" is so subjective.
I hear the same question a lot with motorcycles.
I'd try to look up some trucks like yours with aftermarket exhaust on youtube or try to get around other trucks like yours at a Ford show and pick the brains of owners who have what you are looking for.
There really is no "best", only what is best for you.
 
i got a thrush welded on my 94 4.0 its cheaper than the 40 but it has a nice tone
